The OBC continues its journey through the music of the greatest symphonist of the last third of the 19th century, after the performance of the Third Symphony in the previous concert. The colossal magnitude of his ten symphonies was posthumously recognised as one of the greatest contributions to the Germanic orchestral tradition, with a profound and overarching language comparable to the sound worlds of Wagner and Mahler.

Symphony no. 7 is possibly the best-known work by the composer, along with his Symphony no. 4, and was his greatest success during his lifetime. Compared to his other symphonies, this one underwent relatively few revisions (only two) and was performed on numerous occasions. The majesty of the lengthy thematic and motivic developments is intertwined with bright fragments of choral texture, imbued with a clear Wagnerian influence.
